Asia: a key vector of Arkema’s strategy
In the last few years, the global economic environment for the chemical sector has undergone an in-depth transformation. Markets have taken on an international dimension, and new players have appeared in emerging countries, particularly in Asia where Arkema already has an extensive presence, essentially in China with 5 production sites, as well as in India, Singapore, Korea and Japan.
Arkema’s industrial facilities in Asia span a number of product lines, in particular hydrogen peroxide, fluorinated gases, PMMA, functional additives, organic peroxides, polyamides, and slush molding compounds.
In 2007, the Asian continent accounted for 13 % of Arkema’s sales, i.e. some € 750 M, and 8 % of Arkema’s personnel, i.e. 1,300 people. This represents a solid base from which to plan a major growth in Arkema’s presence and sales in the coming years.
Arkema’s ambition is to increase to 20% the share of its sales in Asia by 2012. To achieve this objective, Arkema will speed up the pace of its development in Asia by investing some € 50 M every year in this region of the world.
With its Kyoto Research Center in Japan, Arkema has a local R&D hub to sustain its growth on the Asian continent. The gradual introduction of technical expertise available locally in China and the development of new applications like Altuglas® LCD screens, the CVD technology for flat glass, Pebax® in sports applications, and new-generation fluorinated gases all testify to the inroad made by our products and brands in this region of the world.
